Here is a video on youtube by The Sheeky Science Show. Going over some results of some studies, showing graphs and other data, explaining potential benefits and some mechanisms.

Taurine - a supplement for longevity

Some timestamps and extracts from the video:

1:02 taurine influnces absorption of fat and fat soluble vitamins
1:14 has been attributed as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, binds to GABAa and glycine receptors (shows image comparing molecular structure of taurine and gaba side by side)
1:30 may play a role in mitochondrial protein production
1:39 image stating that TUDCA administration removes abnormal proteins (abnormal protein = cytotoxicity) that result in cells with decreased taurine function, and recovers cell function
so if the graphic is correct, then inadequate taurine function leads to cytotoxicity via erroneous protein production in mitochondria
1:46 1.5g of taurine per day for 16 weeks in human females, prevented decreases in the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase
~3:40 shows a graph of the massive decline in taurine with age

4:56 results of research in monkeys:
- increase bone density and content in the lumbar spine (L1 to L4) and legs, but not in the head, compared with control group
- osteocalcin increased (serum marker of bone formation) Osteocalcin - Wikipedia
- C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen [Ctx] decreased (serum marker of resorption) C-terminal telopeptide - Wikipedia
- reduced fasting blood glucose by 19%
- reduced serum concentrations of AST and alanine transaminase (ALT) by ~36% and 20% respectively (serum marker of liver damage)
- number of white blood cells: monocytes and granulocytes, which increase with age, were decreased by ~50% compared to control group (??)

5:34 results of research in mice:
- decreased, age-associated increase in senescence

- unlikely that effects seen by taurine is only due to reduced senescence, as they gave senolytics to a mouse model that were taurine
deficient, and found that the senolytic treatment did not fully recover lifespan decline (decline from taurine deficiency)

6:08 association analysis of 12000 humans:
- higher blood taurine and hypotaurine levels were associated with lower BMI
- higher blood levels of taurine metabolites (same as above but may include N-acetyltaruine?) associated with lower prevelance of type 2
diabetes and lower blood glucose.

6:38 some benefits are greater in females compared to in males
7:03 mice dosage used in those studies, translated to humans is around 3-6 grams of taurine daily for an 80kg human

7:26 ideas for the reason of taurine decline with increasing age:
- ? older study thought it was due to age dependant depletion of enzyme activity in the liver that is involved in generating taurine from cysteine
- ? changes in diet
- ? changes in the absorbion of taurine from food.
- ? changes in production of taurine
- ? when do the levels decline (from graph shown at 3:40 seems decline is rapid and starts early in life in monkeys)
- ? are there genetic links

8:07 author of some study says the chemical mechanisms by which taurine actually influences cells at a molecular level are not fully understood.

Some person in the comments on youtube, claims to be a retired bio/engineer that worked with taurine and that they found taurine exists in spirulina/chlorella
and kelp algae. Doesn't say the amount.

@TruffleGnocchi - Thanks for including detailed notes. I get addional taurine as a mmagnesium taurate. I may take additional taurine as well based on this thread.
