Peat has said that backache is often related to endotoxin.
This study's results would seem to be different,
though there could be a relation...?

In this case, the Danish researchers saythat bacteria--
one that also causes acne--
can actually be found inside/adjacent to the disks,
and this is the cause of much chronic backache.

I believe they are using the word "cure,"
and it apparently involves a 100 day course of antibiotics.
I don't know what kind were used.

(I've had lower back problems for a long time,
so this is of interest to me.)

I wonder if this applies to obese patients. At some point it becomes hard to exclude mechanical stress.

Seen this study when it was released. What I remember is that it wasn't applying to obese in specific.

Sure there could be a relation with endotoxin, in Peat's time we had little tools to make such findings and also the body was thought to be largely sterile. Forget the sterile body, it looks like bacteria are being found everywhere these days. Even bacterial DNA is found in the human brain (BBB should protect). Also forget the endotoxin only problems. When Peat saw someone with gut issues or symtpoms that suggest gut issues. He made the conncention with endotoxin and endotoxin plays a role for sure, but it's not endotoxin only.

Back pain is one of the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Low thyroid increases estrogen and estrogen blocks thyroid function.
RP has mentioned how antibiotic therapy helped infertile women
by reducing exndotoxin. Since endotoxin burdens liver, it also increases
estrogen. These stress hormones usually do not work alone, they work in groups,
this also increases cortisol and serotonin. Estrogen works with PUFA and increases
prostaglandin production. All these blocks thyroid function. There are also other
factors that are trigger with all these. It is not simple endotoxin that doing the job
alone, it is a part of stress response team, like a gang.

Unenergized cell ( from high estrogen low thyroid) takes up water and this
causes all the joints to weaken. In RP view, acne is caused by low thyroid and
high estrogen on skin and cure is to increase thyroid function and improve
ratio of estrogen to anti-stress hormones like progesterone.

Edit: RP has also mentioned how excess estrogen in skin promotes fungal infection.

Here is the full study :
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3631023/

"Conclusion

These findings support the theory that the occurrence of MCs Type 1 in the vertebrae adjacent to a previously herniated disc may be due to oedema surrounding an infected disc. The discs infected with anaerobic bacteria were more likely (P < 0.0038) to develop MCs in the adjacent vertebrae than those in which no bacteria were found or those in which aerobic bacteria were found."

Infection causes edema and edema increases the possibility of infection.
We do not know for sure which happened first in this study.

This seems to me a very true summation of
the way Peat might generally approach such a situation.

Much there points toward the basic Peatian imperative:
Restore Metabolism.
Thyroid.
Correct food.
DePufication.
Wrinkles (specific deficiencies: vitamin, mineral...)

I'm not sure where exactly Peat would caution against antibiotic overuse.
He does like the sterile gut direction.
Over-abundant endotoxin might reasonably contribute to
specific bacterial infection at the local (disk) level.
Not impossible that your Peat workpoints are consonant
with this therapy of treating backache with antibiotics....
