Relevant:

Lysyl oxidase is an extracellular copper enzyme that catalyzes formation of aldehydes from lysine residues in collagen and elastin precursors.

Maybe that means copper supplementation could raise lysine requirements.

have you noticed any unwanted side effects from lysine?

I think it's in this thread up a ways, Peata,
but kin says he got an unpleasant feeling from high doses of lysine
or maybe lysine plus biotin.
I had said something was giving me a "scared-y cat" feeling,
and he suggested the lysine or lysine+biotin.
It is my leading suspect at this point,
as I've avoided lysine over 2g per day,
or lysine in combo with biotin,
with no recurrence.
While picking back up use of the other suspects at the time, like methylene blue.
(Thanks for the tip, kin!)

ok, thanks. i am tempted to switch over to lysine instead of cyproheptadine but am undecided. i like the effects from cypro, especially on higher doses (except increased appetite). But cypro doesn't feel "clean" to me in the system like vitamin and minerals. If you know what I mean. And I don't know if some of that thinking is just in the back of my mind that it's an Rx. But even so, there are things about it that make me feel that way - such as how it causes zombification when increasing the dose even just a little (though that wears off as tolerance develops) or the actual withdrawals from it I had in the fall (it reminded me of going off ssri's except it was blessedly quick and much easier, but still).

Peata-
I've tried cypro.
In my experience I wouldn't compare the way it makes me feel to lysine.
In fact, other than what I just mentioned above,
I can't really pin down any particular feeling or effect lysine gives me.
Whereas cypro--strong stuff, and in small doses!
(Though I do agree about the sleepiness/zombie-ness wearing off with use.)

kineticz says it makes him feel very relaxed (or something in that vein).
haidut says it allows him to eat stuff he normally can't without suffering,
and I think he also said it makes him feel, in high doses,
very relaxed and perhaps somewhat zombified.

I think I'm just going to stay on the cypro for now. In fact, I'm increasing the dose to 4 mg. per day, divided. I feel it lowers serotonin and enhances dopamine. I can't chalk up all the energy and good mood, motivation, I have to B vitamins, protein, sunlight, blood sugar, etc. Because I know Cypro does have an effect on me. I felt this way in the Fall too, when I was taking it.

Brilliant :D

I've switched to a different supplier of lysine and strangely, I can handle slightly more of it without the scared feeling. Either quality or my nutrients have changed.

My reaction to lysine is:

Less general anxiety and paranoia
A more mellow, level headed attitude to challenges

It's a very subtle but effective supplement.

Yes, that's how I felt on the higher doses of cypro. Less fear of "what ifs". I could go ahead and do things in the now, without feeling paralyzed about uncertainties that might or might not happen in the future.

... If anything, since cyproheptadine is considered a peripheral serotonin antagonist as well, it should help weight loss through improved metabolism. Anything that blocks serotonin synthesis or its effects on tissues helps restore metabolism. Serotonin and estrogen are the cardinal metabolic poisons, and are of course driven by PUFA and stress. We had a thread on blocking peripheral serotonin as a viable methods of inducing weight loss...

I didn't follow up on this back when you first wrote it, but I'll look into it more and find the thread where you were talking about it.

Serotonin, prolactin, and cortisol can rise independent of estrogen.

Serotonin is definitely a cardinal metabolic poison. Estrogen, at least E2, I'm not convinced. I think context is crucial.

Which suppliers?
HCl salt or free-form?

Hi it's the free-form.

be taken instead of gelatine ? as they are the top 6 constituents of gelatine itself ?

Never seen any evidence that taurine and silica have anything to do with collagen synthesis, so if you have some info it'd be great if you'd share.

well, it's the number one skin supplement.

Which, again, says nothing about taurine or silica.

Yes. It helped me to verify that the assumptions which you presented without evidence, and which you have so far been unwilling to substantiate, are apparently baseless.
