It seems like emodin can be absorbed topically:

Emodin, an anthraquinone derivative from Rheum officinale Baill, enhances cutaneous wound healing in rats.

You can get emodin from cascara. Although I don't know what the concentration of emodin in cascara, emodin is the active ingredient in cascara, so laxative effect is proof that there is emodin in the cascara you're using.

I have wondered what happens to the emodin when ingesting some cascara orally. Obviously, the emodin reaches some cells in the gut since it can be laxative, for example cells the colon will take up less water. Does it reach other tissues in the body too? Because there are studies that show it has all sorts of good effects like anti-cancer effects in some diseased tissues studied, but I'm never sure what's the exact emodin administration used.
