Memory impairment has been associated with age-related decline in adult hippocampal neurogenesis. Although Notch, bone morphogenetic protein, and Wnt signaling pathways are known to regulate multiple aspects of adult neural stem cell function, the molecular basis of declining neurogenesis in the aging hippocampus remains unknown. Here, we show that expression of the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf-1 (Dkk1) increases with age and that its loss enhances neurogenesis in the hippocampus

DHT induces Dickkopf-1

Dickkopf-1, the Wnt antagonist, is induced by acidic pH

"After acute and chronic acid (pH 4) exposure, esophageal squamous epithelial cell lines expressed and secreted high levels of Dkk1 in response to stress-associated DNA injury"

Long-term estrogen deprivation leads to elevation of Dickkopf-1 and dysregulation of Wnt/β-Catenin signaling in hippocampal CA1 neurons

I've read some pretty wild claims around here that DHT is beneficial and one should raise his 5-a reductase activity, these studies show that it induces neurodegeneration, and it probably is one of the main reasons why women live longer than men.

I can't remember where, but I'm pretty sure I read that the hippocampus can't lay down new memories effectively while cortisol is too high. Chronically high cortisol would be common in old age, right?

:bump2,i know this was posted half a decade ago but i think that this is only a problem if you don't have enough progesterone and allopregnanolone in the brain since i'm pretty sure DHT has a beneficial effect on cognition.

@haidut do you have any idea?
