Interesting comment down in the discussion:

There's actually a story behind this one. It's a quality control issue with the water supply used. Corn syrup has bacteria-killing properties to it, but Coca-Cola wanted to stick with cane sugar instead. In 1985, the FDA tested the water supply of all of the cities with bottling plants, and Cleveland was the only city with a water supply suitable for producing Coca-Cola without corn syrup. This is because Cleveland had a unique water purification system still active to this day, where the water is boiled in order to remove any impurities and kill bacteria. It's known as the Cleveland Steamer. It's actually really cool, but I'm on mobile now so I can't link. Search "cleveland steamer videos" and you should be able to find footage. Definitely worth checking out, there's nothing in the world like it.

Those videos are fascinating. Very Peaty. Every city should be petitioned to adopt that purification system.

What I find more fascinating is that the FDA comes up with corn-syrup as a way to fight bacteria when there are about a million other, more obvious possibilities to achieve the same.

That passage you quoted is a joke, albeit masterfully worked into the topic. I knew immediately when I saw the phrase "Cleveland Steamer".

Why do people on that website draw jokes out so long?
