Washington — The Ebola epidemic is spreading so fast that it is turning into a humanitarian crisis leaving children orphaned, families hungry and people dying of treatable conditions, top health experts said on Tuesday in calling for more international aid for West Africa.

Re: West Africa: Ebola Spreading Fast, International Aid Not

More Aid? What kind of Aid? the americans have given $1 billion taxpayer money to the cause, and how much of that is going to vaccine research & treatment (vaccination) centers?

It's a sad state when the US can own a patent on a virus, then this virus starts showing up, then one of this countries pharma companies miraculously create a vaccine in 1/30th of the time it usually takes to create a vaccine, then justify bypassing proper animal & human trials due to the fact that they consider the situation a pandemic.

Anyone who dies from ebola probably had a faulty immune system, & is most like just collateral damage for the fat cats in big pharma & the gov. I do not believe it will be an emergency in first world countries, just a sprinkling here & there to convince everyone to take the vaccine (I'm sure many living near Dallas are sh***ing themselves right now). Unfortunately Africa's cries will fall on deaf ears, just like the slavery & multiple child hunger deaths that happen every minute.

Ebola kills 8 Soldiers in Liberia

The deceased, according to our source, contracted Ebola recently at the Edward Binyan Kesseley (EBK) Barracks when a lady unsuspected of carrying the disease, visited one of the victims, Cpl Floson Louise.

The ‘concubine’ who visited the late soldier has also been victimized by the disease. She is yet to be identified.

“When she slept at the EBK, it was thereafter the soldiers contracted the disease, and could not survive despite “intensive treatment” at the various Ebola Treatment Units in Monrovia,” our source disclosed.

Outbreak of Ebola-like Marburg fever kills man in Uganda

KAMPALA, Oct 5 (Reuters) - A man has died in Uganda's capital after an outbreak of Marburg, a highly infectious hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola, authorities said on Sunday, adding that a total of 80 people who came into contact with him were quarantined.

Uganda has been hit by several outbreaks of Marburg and Ebola in the past, but it has contained the outbreaks quickly, limiting fatalities.

Sierra Leone records 121 Ebola deaths in a single day

FREETOWN, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Sierra Leone recorded 121 deaths from Ebola and scores of new infections in one of the single deadliest days since the disease appeared in the West African country more than four months ago, government health statistics showed on Sunday.

The figures, which covered the period through Saturday, put the total number of deaths at 678, up from 557 the day before. The daily statistics compiled by Sierra Leone's Emergency Operations Centre also showed 81 new cases of the haemorrhagic fever.

Back in Liberia, Ebola is killing Thomas Duncan's neighbors

Monrovia, Liberia (CNN) -- His home in Monrovia is just as he left it when he boarded the plane to the United States.

A tiny tin-roofed room in a run-down building that's now the focal point of so much of the paranoia ricocheting across the world.

But while the United States struggles to contain the fear stirred up by Thomas Eric Duncan's diagnosis in Dallas, here there's a different concern. Here, they are struggling to come to terms with the mounting death toll of all those who -- like Duncan -- came in contact with the pregnant woman who gave him Ebola.

Already nine others are dead or dying. All the neighbors have been put quarantined.

Ebola-hit Sierra Leone launches school by radio

Sierra Leone on Tuesday launched an ambitious schooling effort for more than a million children denied their education due to the Ebola epidemic, saying lessons would be delivered via radio.

Classes in a variety of subjects will be broadcast for four hours, six days a week, on 41 radio stations and the country's sole TV channel, the government announced.

"The plan is to provide a suitable option for our school-going population as the entire school system has been disrupted since the outbreak of the Ebola disease," said Education Minister Minkailu Bah.

Schools have been closed since the government announced a state of emergency in July in response to an epidemic which has killed 3,500 people in west Africa, more than 600 of them in Sierra Leone.

Gallery: Ebola in Guinea - Finda Marie's story

An MSF doctor takes her temperature. At 36.6C she has no fever. Although the Ebola virus often causes a fever, the fact that she does not have one is not a decisive factor in determining whether or not a patient is infected.

Ebola-hit Liberia cancels nationwide election

Ebola-hit Liberia has suspended its nationwide Senate polls after the election commission admitted it would not be able to stage the ballot safely, according to a government statement. Almost three million voters had been due in polling stations on Tuesday but organisers said there was no way a "mass movement, deployment and gathering of people" could go ahead without further endangering lives.

:( I couldn't read it all but I thought this information about pregnancies presenting differently should be noted.

Pixie from PFI - "Pregnant women are presenting differently with ebola. Their symptoms seem to come on suddenly and often miscarriage is the first indication something is wrong; they do not seem to present the usual Ebola symptoms in the proper order prior to that sudden onset. "

That very well could be. Since he sleeps separate from his family I wonder if it is possible that he could be an asymptomatic carrier. He at least seems to considers it possible that he could infect them. What a truly selfless human being.
