After trying ear thermometers, oral thermometers, and infrared non-contact thermometers, I started to get frustrated because none of the thermometers would show a consistent reading. I'd get temperatures half a (Fahrenheit) degree apart, using the same armpit/mouth/ear for consecutive readings taken just a minute apart. Just this morning, I saw online that rectal temperatures give the most reliable readings, so I used the above thermometer to do a rectal reading. For the first time, I get the same reading (within .1 degrees F) consistently. So, I'd say, in my experience, using a rectal thermometer is the most reliable way to get basal temp.

Thanks! Are there are any best brands/models to look for when buying a vintage oral thermometer. I dont want to buy the wrong thing or an unreliable one :)

I can't help you there. All I know is that all of my vintage mercury people thermometers work just fine. The manufacture of mercury thermometers (the only ones that actually work) is now banned (for our "protection"). All 5 of my digital thermometers are garbage.

I spoke with the customer service guy at Acella, the manufacturer of my prescription thyroid medication; he basically told me that the company (Acella) is well aware that digital thermometers do not work properly. Evidently, patients contact them a lot with questions about their medication not working properly because their digital thermometer can't acurately determine their temperature.
