5 gallon bottles of spring water can be had from a variety of grocery and hardware stores in the USA for about $8 (usually a $7 deposit for the bottle). All these filtration/distillation systems don't pencil out so much better, in my opinion. Of course, hauling the full bottles home is quite a pain. There are also delivery services, but that adds to expense.
An added advantage of buying bulk bottled water is disaster preparedness. I just happen to think it's a good idea to have ten gallons of drinking water per person on reserve, just in case.
