The chelating process by which phytates bond to iron and toxic minerals and removes them from the body has led to theories about their use for detoxification. Currently, phytic acid is used therapeutically to remove uranium.“

“Once ingested, phytic acid forms insoluble compounds with minerals, proteins, enzymes, and starches. This impairs the absorption of proteins and minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium.”

“Unfortunately, coffee also contains toxic heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb)[16,17,18], although available studies primarily cover instant coffee.”

“Therefore, it should be considered whether it is advisable for flavoured multi-ingredient instant coffee drinks to be consumed from time to time only, and natural coffee with optional milk and/or sugar be the choice of regular coffee drinkers.”

“Copper is an important nutrient in a variety of foods that the body needs to function properly. Copper can be obtained by eating a variety of foods high in copper, such as cooked spinach, cooked asparagus, and fresh parsley, which contain 300mcg of copper per serving. It is critical to note that excessive copper consumption can be fatal. Copper toxicity can result from consuming too much copper-rich food or dietary supplements, or from drinking acidic beverages or eating food stored in copper containers for an extended period of time.”

Thank-you. Looking for some non toxic cookware at the moment. I am keen on the enamel coated pots like the French brands made not long ago but they no longer seem made in Europe. Even glass can contain lead - I see some drinking glass manufacturers advertising lead free. Maybe most don't have it and they are just using marketing.

I knew of leaded crystal, but I didn’t know glass can still have lead…

“Lead is not typically added to glass as an ingredient, except for leaded crystal, which is clearly disclosed on the label. However, lead is everywhere in the environment and any raw material is likely to have some degree of lead contamination.”

“Before regulation in 1969, most crystal glass contained around 36% lead, per Dusty Old Thing; since then, glassblowers have generally considered 24% lead standard. Today, according to Gurasu Fine Crystal, any glass that contains between 10% and 24% should be labeled as crystal glass.”

“Studies on human subjects have shown that calcium (Ca) can inhibit iron (Fe) absorption, regardless of whether it is given as Ca salts or in dairy products. This has caused concern as increased Ca intake commonly is recommended for children and women, the same populations that are at risk of Fe deficiency.”

“Yes, tea and coffee have both shown the ability to reduce mercury absorption from meals. For the drinks to have this effect, it is best to drink them at the same time of the meal. Only true teas from Camellia sinensis such as black tea, green tea, white tea, and oolong tea are able to produce this effect due to their polyphenol content. Herbal teas generally do not have the required chemical composition to reduce mercury absorption from meals.”

“Whilst elemental mercury is not particularly well absorbed by the body when ingested from food, in ocean food chains, around 50% of the mercury is in the form of a complex called methylmercury(MeHg) – a highly toxic compound that is readily absorbed by the body. Methylmercury is known to enter the bloodstream in significantly higher levels than elemental mercury, and can cross the blood-brain barrier. [1]

Significant exposure to methylmercury can cause widespread damage in the body, including to the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and immune system. Therefore, taking steps to reduce mercury absorption from meals is a vital part of being able to safely consume fish and seafood.“

“There are a number of common sources of mercury in our environment including:

  • larger fish species – if eaten in large quantities, these can increase the amount of mercury in your body
  • fluorescent and low-energy light bulbs – if broken, there is some risk from inhaling mercury vapour and skin contact with mercury
  • mercury thermometers – the pure mercury (or ‘quicksilver’) from broken thermometers could pose some risk to people if they inhale mercury vapour or have skin contact with mercury
  • dental fillings – modern amalgam fillings have a low level of mercury, which is considered safe for most people
  • batteries – some batteries contain mercury that can enter the environment if they end up in landfill.”

“Can broken fluorescent and CFL bulbs cause mercury poisoning? What happens if you inhale mercury from a light bulb?

Although there is not enough mercury in one bulb to cause significant harm upon breaking, inhaling too much of it over a long period of time could lead to serious health issues. So you should take caution when handling them.

What to do if a mercury-containing light bulb breaks

Don’t panic! First, make sure any people or animals leave the area. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Open a window or door to ventilate the room and turn off the heating/cooling system if practical.
  2. For hard surfaces, use stiff cardboard to scoop up broken pieces. Then use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining glass or powder. Finally, use a flashlight to help visualize the tiny beads of mercury.
  3. Use wet wipes or wet paper towels to clean hard surfaces and then discard them.
  4. Place all contaminated items in a plastic trash bag, seal them with duct tape, and place them in the outdoor trash or bring them to a disposal site in your area.
  5. Wash your skin well with soap and water after cleanup.
  6. If a spill involves a large volume of mercury or a large surface area, consider using a professional cleaning company that is licensed in environmental mercury cleanup.
  7. Call the Missouri Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222. Our specially trained staff can help guide you on what to do and how to stay safe from exposure.
In addition to what to do when a bulb breaks, here is what NOT to do when a bulb breaks.

What NOT to do if a mercury-containing light bulb breaks

When a light bulb containing mercury breaks, it can be scary. Here are a few things that you should NOT do:

  1. Do NOT use a vacuum or broom to clean the pieces up. Doing so will increase the chances of exposure because more mercury particles will waft into the air.
  2. Do NOT walk around with your shoes in other parts of the house or building if they have come into contact with any of the pieces.
  3. Do NOT wash any clothing or other objects like rugs that have come into contact with mercury in the washing machine.”

“In just a few years, MSM has become a supplement of choice for detox treatments. And with good cause, as it offers several advantages for in-depth detoxification of the body. Firstly, the sulfur provided by MSM is an excellent chelator of heavy metals. This means it helps eliminate heavy metals such as aluminum, lead and mercury that accumulate in the liver. Studies also show MSM can help cleanse the body by improving cell membrane permeability, a process which promotes the elimination of toxins by cells. Suffice to say that this compound could prove very useful for your next detox treatment!“

“Consume Foods That May Help to Counteract Heavy Metals

Following a nutrient-dense whole foods diet is critical. But you may be more strategic by adding specific foods that may help to remove and counteract heavy metals. You may learn more about this in this article. In summary, the following foods may help to counteract heavy metal exposures:

  • Sulfur-rich foods: Cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, garlic, and onion are examples of sulfur-containing foods which can help in the process of detoxification.
  • Foods high in vitamin C: Oranges, strawberries, grapefruit, kale, and red peppers can help to reduce the toxic effects of heavy metals owing to their high vitamin C content.
  • Pectin-rich fruits and vegetables: Pectin is a soluble fiber found in pears, green apples, citrus fruits, cabbage, beets, and carrots. Pectin has been found to increase heavy metal excretion.
  • Foods containing amino acids: Amino acids are considered natural chelating agents and can be found in corn, whole grains, spinach, carrots, turnips, plums, grapes, and pomegranates.
  • Foods rich in iron: The combination of iron deficiency with lead exposures is not a good one. Iron rich foods include red and organ meats are the best sources.”

“It has been proven that consuming organic wild blueberry extract may help detox heavy metals from the brains’ lymphatics and detoxify the brain by inhabiting a particular protein that blocks the brains’ cleansing process.”

“These small blueberries can not be cultivated or grown in any form and are only found in rural areas away from pollution, so you know you get the cleanest and most nutritious kind of berries!”

Just a note to people who think that 'wild blueberries' are automatically wild harvested or organic, the name 'wild blueberry' is a nomenclature or name given to a particular breed of wild blueberry, but they can be cultivated by producers and have chemicals applied to them. Here is an e-mail reply when I asked Wymans about how they grew their wild blueberries:
Hi David,

Thank you for reaching out. While the management of natural wild blueberry habitat in Maine does require some use of pesticides to keep control of competing vegetation and insect or fungal infestations, we work constantly to reduce their use to minimal levels and to time their application such that they are naturally degraded to harmless substances by the time the berries appear on the bushes. One big advantage we have over cultivated blueberries is that we allow the blueberry plants to recover for a year in between harvests. We do this by splitting our land into even and odd year parcels.

Our reduction of use has been achieved (and is still being achieved) by using Integrated Pest Management techniques of identifying at-risk fields and applying chemicals only when a target threshold is noted and then only to the immediate area affected.

We are proud to offer wild blueberries that are completely safe for consumers to eat. It should provide you additional confidence to know that our berries are thoroughly washed before being flash frozen within hours of harvesting. An application of a dilute chlorine spray before freezing ensures the safety of our berries. After this sanitizing step, any chlorine is removed in the flash freezer, leaving the berries clean and ready to eat. The result is a product that is 100% free of harmful residues.

Best,

Best,
I marvel at the minimizing in their description, spraying with chlorine in the end. I guess unless they are growing wild growing them oneself would be best. I am attempting to grow them.
