DMSO - The Real Miracle Solution

In 1866, Russian scientist Alexander Saytzeff isolated a most curious and peculiar chemical compound. It was crystalline, odor-less, non-toxic and had a garlic-like taste when consumed. At the time, Saytzeff had no way to predict that his discovery was going to prove highly controversial throughout its entire medical history, that it was going to be tested in thousands of studies and provide miraculous relief for numerous patients.

I'm talking here about dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), an organic sulfur compound which was used only as an industrial solvent, that is, until its medical properties were discovered in 1963 by a research team headed by Stanley W. Jacob, MD.

DMSO is a by-product of kraft pulping (the 'sulfate process') which converts wood into wood pulp leaving almost pure cellulose fibers. As industrial as it may sound, the process simply entails a treatment of wood chips with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, known as white liquor, breaking the bonds which link lignin (from the Latin word lignum, meaning wood) to the cellulose.

DMSO is useful as a pain reliever and also in burns, acne, arthritis, mental retardation, strokes, amyloidosis, head injury, scleroderma, it soothes toothaches, eases headaches, hemorroids, muscle strains, it prevents paralysis from spinal-chord injuries and softens scar tissues. In fact, it is useful in well over 300 ailments and is safe to use. You might think that a compound that has so many alleged uses and benefits should be automatically suspect, so let's have a close look at its properties and the data available and we'll shed some light in this miraculous chemical.

Sulfur: The Stuff of Life

DMSO is an intermediate product of the global Sulfur Cycle which distributes bioavailable sulfur for all animal and plant life (Parcell, 2002). Sulfur compounds are found in all body cells and are indispensable for life, they are needed for a number of chemical reactions involved in the detoxification of drugs and other harmful toxins, and they have potential clinical applications in the treatment of a number of conditions such as depression, fibromyalgia, arthritis, interstitial cystitis, athletic injuries, congestive heart failure, diabetes, cancer, and AIDS (Parcell, 2002). Among the sulfur compounds, DMSO is probably the one that has the widest range and greatest number of therapeutic applications ever shown for any other single chemical. It has around 40 pharmacological properties that may be beneficial in the prevention, relief or reversal of numerous diseases (Morton, 1993). Someone complained to Dr. Jacob of a splitting headache and gave him permission to apply some DMSO after hearing of its capabilities. The headache was gone in minutes, came back in four hours, and left for good after DMSO was applied a second time. Used for one purpose, sometimes it did another; put on a cold sore, within a few hours it cleared up a woman's sinusitis. A woman who had had a stroke found after DMSO was painted on her painful jaw that she could now write with her paralyzed hand and could walk better. (Haley, 2000) Therapeutic Properties

DMSO is an effective pain killer, blocking nerve conduction fibers that produce pain. It reduces inflammation and swelling by reducing inflammatory chemicals. It improves blood supply to an area of injury by dilating blood vessels and increasing delivery of oxygen and by reducing blood platelet stickiness. It stimulates healing, which is a key to its usefulness in any condition. It is among the most potent free radical scavengers known to man, if not the most potent one. This is a crucial mechanism since some molecules in our bodies produce an unequal number of electrons and the instability of the number causes them to destroy other cells. DMSO hooks on to those molecules and they are then expelled from the body with the DMSO.

Dr Stanley Jacob working with DMSO in the 1960s

DMSO also penetrates the skin and the blood-brain barrier with ease, penetrating tissues, and entering the bloodstream. Furthermore, DMSO protects the cells from mechanical damage and less of it is needed to achieve results as time passes as oppossed to most pharmaceuticals where increasing doses are required. It has a calming effect in the central nervous system and it reaches all areas of the body, when absorbed through the skin, including the brain. That is, DMSO applied to one area often leads to pain relief in some other location due to its systemic effect.

It acts as a carrier for other substances or drugs and it also potentiates their effect. In fact, certain drugs dissolved in DMSO, such as corticoids, antibiotics and insulin, may be used in a lower dose than usual without reducing their therapeutic efficacy and in addition, their undesirable side effects are greatly diminished. Also, drugs are able to pass through the blood-brain barrier which is usually impenetrable.

DMSO promotes the excretion of urine and functions as a muscle relaxant. It boosts the immune system, increasing the production of white cells and macrophages that destroy foreign material and pathogens in the body. It also has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. DMSO also increases the permeability of cell membranes, allowing a flushing of toxins from the cell.

DMSO has radioprotective properties against lethal and mutagenic effects of X-rays in cells, cellular systems and whole animals. It also has cryoprotective properties, meaning that it is capable of protecting against injury due to freezing.
DMSO has also been shown to have cholinesterase properties (Sams, 1967), in other words, it inhibits an enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine, increasing both the level and duration of action of this important neurotransmitter. Acetylcholine is responsible for learning and memory and is also calming and relaxing. Acetylcholine is also a major factor in regulating the immune system, acting as a major brake on inflammation in the body.

As a source of sulfur, DMSO aids in heavy metal detoxification. Sulfur binds with toxic heavy metals (mercury, lead, aluminum, cadmium, arsenic, nickel) and eliminates them via urination, defecation and sweating.

FDA and Big Pharma Obstacles

DMSO is sold in health food stores, mail-order outlets, on the Internet, and in most countries around the world. It is used by millions for its health benefits yet in the U.S., DMSO has FDA approval only as a preservative of stem cells, bone marrow cells, and organs for transplant, and for interstitial cystitis - a painful inflammatory condition of the bladder which is very difficult to treat with other therapies.

That DMSO has not found favor as a remedy for other medical conditions is partly due to the inability to test it in double-blind experiments. Blind studies, as the name suggests, requires that a study be done without knowing which patient is taking the placebo or the drug. In the case of the DMSO, a blind study is impossible since the peculiar garlic-like taste and smell (no matter the route of application) gives it away and no satisfactory placebo could be devised that would mimic this particular effect of DMSO (Steinberg, 1967).

The FDA and 'big pharma' would prefer we remain dependent on their drugs

If you search for DMSO on the U.S. National Library of Medicine (pubmed.gov), you'll get almost 30,000 indexed results, making it one of the most studied compounds of our time. Yet, we are led to believe that DMSO can't pass the required regulations for its approval in other medical conditions even though its effectiveness and low toxicity profile is unquestionable.

You see, DMSO is a common chemical that can be manufactured cheaply. No drug company can get an exclusive patent since it is also a natural compound, therefore there is no significant financial return. In fact, an executive of a major drug company is quoted as saying, "I don't care if DMSO is the major drug of our century and we all know it is, it isn't worth it to us" [CBS TV show 60 minutes with Mike Wallace, The Riddle of DMSO]. If DMSO were to be approved by the FDA, it would be competetive and drug companies would be unable to hold the patents. In the words of the director of the Bureau of Drugs of the FDA, J. Richard Crout, M.D., "DMSO is a low toxicity and safe compound (...) I think that it is a fact of life that drug companies are not going to invest in something unless they think there is some financial return" [CBS TV show 60 minutes with Mike Wallace, The Riddle of DMSO].

Despite restrictions on the use of DMSO, thousands of Americans purchase it on the 'black market' each year, its popularity due not to publicity, but rather 'word of mouth'. When you have something that relieves all kinds of ailments, including some life-threatening ones, people naturally recommend it to friends and family!

In Perspective

In the 1960s, research with DMSO on humans was temporarily halted after certain animals treated with DMSO were found to have changes in the eye lens. Some of these changes resembled those seen in aging dogs (Gordon, 1967), but nevertheless, research was gradually restarted after no evidence was found of eye changes in humans. As Daniel Haley reports in his book Politics in Healing: "Tests in rabbits, dogs, and pigs (but not humans) had shown some problems. When quantities of DMSO equal to about ten times the maximum human dose were given every day over a period of six months, slight changes in the lenses of the animals' eyes would result, enough to produce a slight nearsightedness. The lens changes were not enough to cause dogs difficulty when running - they didn't bump into things - and in some cases, the changes disappeared after the massive DMSO doses were stopped. In no test at that time or since has DMSO ever caused cataracts, either in animals or in humans" (Haley, 2000).

In fact, DMSO is effective for macular degeneration and retinal disease, both diseases of the eye. This effectiveness was first discovered when patients with retinitis pigmentosa, a retinal disease, were taking DMSO for certain musculoskeleteal disorders. They sensed that their vision had improved and some had remarkable results (Morton, 1993). As far as eyes are concerned, the evidence on DMSO is quite to the contrary. When several patients treated with DMSO for muscular problems reported to Dr. Jacob that their vision had improved, he sent them to Dr. Robert O. Hill, ophthalmologist at the University of Oregon Medical School. Confirming the favorable changes, Dr. Hill began his own experiments with DMSO (after it was known that the lens changes did not happen in humans). His research showed drops of 50% DMSO to be effective in retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration, and presented a report on this at the New York Academy of Sciences symposium in 1971. (Haley, 2000) In contrast, the number of medication-related deaths in the U.S. is estimated at over 200,000 a year, making medications the third or fourth leading cause of death (Pezzalla, 2005). Even common pain relievers called NSAIDs, examples of which include Advil, Motrin, Aleve and aspirin, account for an estimated 7,600 deaths and 76,000 hospitalizations in the U.S. every year (Tamblyn et al, 1997). Taking this into consideration, it is safe to declare that DMSO is among the safest substances in the world today. In fact, the classic test for toxicity -the LD-50 test - measures the lethal dose (LD) at which half of a group of test animals is killed. The LD-50 tests for aspirin and DMSO show that aspirin is seven times more toxic than DMSO (Haley, 2000).

Quick Guide and Ailments

DMSO is generally applied to the skin in a gel, cream, or liquid. It can be taken by mouth or as an intravenous injection, in many cases along with other drugs. It has also been administered subcutaneously, intramuscularly, intraperitoneally, intrathecally, by inhalation, instilled into the eye, on the mucous membranes, and into the urinary bladder. Strenghs and dosages vary widely.

DMSO being distilled

If you are just dealing with pain or an injury, use a topical application. Don't drink it. Drinking it is for serious detoxing and other internal necessities. If you use a rose scented DMSO cream, chances are that nobody will be able to smell DMSO's garlic-like smell.

The usual oral dose of DMSO is one teaspoon per day of DMSO 70% (Morton, 1993). But since it can trigger detoxification reactions and DMSO's total excretion from the body can take several days, it is best to do it only once a week. Start with half a teaspoon of DMSO 50% and increase to a teaspoon of DMSO 70% only if any possible detoxification reaction is well tolerated.

When you use liquid DMSO in the skin, let it dry for over 20 to 30 minutes before wiping the rest out. The skin must be clean, dry, and unbroken for any topical use of DMSO. The face and the neck are more sensitive to DMSO and no higher concenrations than 50% should be applied there. Topical concentrations of DMSO should be kept below 70% in areas where there is a reduction of circulation. When 60 to 90% DMSO is applied to the skin, warmth, redness, itching, and somtimes local hives may occur. This usually disappears within a couple of hours and using natural aloe vera, gel or cream, will help counteract or prevent this effect. When 60 to 90% DMSO is applied to the palm on the hand, the skin may wrinkle and stay that way for several days. "My brother put some DMSO gel (70% dmso, 30% aloe vera) on his shoulders and lower part of neck because he had muscle pain/soreness in that area, and it caused skin redness/irritation for a few hours, although it did diminish the muscle soreness as well...my grandma has rheumatoid arthritis that made her legs swell up and hurt continuously, and I had her apply the same DMSO gel, and after about 2-3 days of applying it once a day, the swelling was 90% gone, and I think within 4-5 days it was 100% gone, and she said the pain diminished as well." - Michael Shatskiy, Los Angeles, California, United States Chronic pain patients often have to apply the substance for 6 weeks before a change occurs, but many report relief to a degree that had not been able to obtain from any other source. In general, the greater the chronicity of the disorder, the longer the treatment with DMSO must be employed in order to achieve palliation (Steinberg , 1967).

Common health problems for which people will apply topical DMSO at home include acute musculoskeletal injuries and inflammations. The earlier DMSO is used, the more dramatic the result. A 70% concentration of DMSO mixed with water in volumes ranging from 8 to 12 ml, applied on and around the injury in a wide area at least three times daily, will have a healing affect in 4 out ot 5 people.

Arthritis, Sprains, Strains

It provides rapid amelioriation of pain and increased mobility and reduction of inflammation when used topically. You can see a positive response within 5 to 20 minutes and usually lasting for 4 to 6 hours. (Steinberg, 1967). "Applying DMSO where it hurt to a six-year-old wasted from rheumatoid arthritis, in a half hour the child could move her shoulder and turn her head for the first time in two years. Persuaded to try walking, she managed a few steps and then burst into tears. "Why are you crying?" Dr Jacob asked her. "Because it doesn't hurt anymore", she replied. (Haley, 2000) "My brother has arthritis of the spine. He is in pain and bedridden more than half the time. When he is treated with DMSO, he is able to lead a normal, active life... Just one application of this cheap, safe DMSO changed my brother from a grimacing patient into an active, pain-free man in exactly 30 minutes!" (Haley, 2000) June Jones, once quarterback and later coach of the Atlanta Falcons pro-football team, had a bursitis calcification in his right shoulder. His career almost didn't happen as he could hardly lift his arm, let alone throw a football. But he was aware of DMSO and had used DMSO for sprains, like thousands of others. He received a shot of DMSO in the shoulder and after using DMSO for 30 days straight, the calcification disappeared. (Haley, 2000) Stroke

Given soon after a stroke, DMSO can dissolve the clot that causes the stroke, restoring circulation and avoiding paralysis. Once DMSO gets into the body either daubed on the skin, given in I.V., or by mouth, it permeates the body and crosses the brain barrier, so even taken orally it can improve circulation. Ideally it should be I.V.

Even though DMSO 40% causes a prolongation of bleeding time, it is still indicated for use in treating embolic or hemorrhagic stroke. DMSO is superior to any other treatment for wounds to the brain where a great deal of bleeding is present (Morton, 1993). One man who had a stroke at 7:30 AM refused to go to the hospital until after his wife had spoken with Dr. Stanley Jacob, which didn't happen until 6:30 PM. Starting at 7 PM the day of the stroke, she gave him one ounce of 50% DMSO in a little orange juice every 15 minutes for two hours and then every half hour for two hours. The next day, her husband was better and soon returned to normal. A substance that can stop a stroke as it's happening is something many might want in their home medicine chest .(Haley, 2000)

Angina, Heart Attacks, Injuries of the Brain and Spinal Chord

DMSO may help neutralize harmful effects on the heart and brain in medical disorders involving the head and spinal chord injury, stroke, memory dysfunction, and ischemic heart disease (Jacob, de la Torre, 2009). A 40% DMSO solution should be administered within four hours to be effective, within ninety minutes is best. After I.V. administration of DMSO, there is an elevation in the amount of spinal cord blood flow to the region of trauma. One of the first things that happens after spinal cord trauma is that a reduction of oxygen and blood flow sets in, inasmuch as the blood vessels constrict or shut down... Without some treatment, the tissue swells. Eventually, this leads to paralysis. In a cerebral stroke, the animal will either become comatose or lethargic or die. With DMSO infusion immediately after injury (or stroke) all this is prevented. - Dr. Jack de Ia Torre, professor of physiology and neurosurgery at the University of New Mexico Dr. Stanley Jacob has even given DMSO intravenously to people who were already paralyzed - paraplegics - and some regained use of limbs. One man, quadraplegic, recovered enough to go through college and then to work in a bank. (Haley, 2000) Infections

When combined with antibiotics, DMSO will convert bacteria which are resistant to a given antibiotic to being sensitive to that same antibiotic and probably a 80 to 90 per cent solution of DMSO will be required in order to be clinically useful ( Pottz, Rampey, Benjamin,1967). DMSO has been used to transport antibiotics to hard-to-reach areas of the body with excellent results, such as the bone marrow and brain (Sanders, 1967).

DMSO can dissolve a virus protein coating, leaving the virus core unprotected with its nucleic acid exposed to the immune system. Applied topically, it alleviates the lesions that occur as a result of Herpes Zoster, shingles (Morton, 1993).
Placed into the nostrils or topically in the face, DMSO can open blocked sinuses within a few minutes and it has been used with sucess in patients with polyps (Marvin, 1967).

DMSO can clear up gum disease and reduce tooth decay and their pain by painting it on the involved areas. "I have some pharmaceutical grade DMSO and I pour about two teaspoons in a glass in the evening, put my 20 mg of doxycycline in it, add about 2 teaspoons of distilled water, and then swish it around in my mouth for about 2 or 3 minutes and then swallow it. So I guess it is about 50% solution. It's really working on my mouth. That inflamed area of my jaw has calmed down about 70% in just a couple of days. Or more, actually. I expect it to be completely soothed by tomorrow after tonight's dose of DMSO." - L., Toulouse, France

Several books have been published on the benefits of DMSO

Keloids, Scars, Burns, Bruises

A concentration of 50 to 80% put on two or three times a day will flatten a raised scar after several months. It is of considerable value in superficial burns (Goldman, 1967) and when applied quickly to an injury, it can eliminate any bruising. "I have been applying it to my face for two weeks... I had a bout of acne in March, and this healed the damage pretty well but what amazed me is that my hyperpigmentation (melasma) has also faded very noticeably. In fact, it's amazing!" - HG, United States "I diluted a 50% solution and applied it topically to the inflamed lymph node. I applied it again this evening. I am totally amazed! There is a noticeable decrease in the size of the node, in just two applications! And it no longer feels matted. This node has been swollen for over 20 years!!! - Melissa Medlock, Coldwater, Michigan, USA

This article states that DMSO is part of the sulfur cycle and so therefore it is a good source of sulfur. It then states the many many benefits of sulfur and wrapped these cleverly, or not so cleverly, around DMSO. The logic and deception here are outrageous. If you read quickly you'll swallow it; slowly and you begin to get mad. I backed up to the assumption that DMSO is part of the sulfur cycle. The sulfur cycle is "the collection of processes by which sulfur moves to and from minerals and living systems." Since DMSO is an organic compound it can be considered part of this cycle. I agree. But the article states that since DMSO is part of this cycle it is a good source of sulfur. I then asked myself what other organic sulfur compounds are around and interestingly found dimethyl sufate, also known as sulfuric acid or DMS. Therefore with the article's logic sulfuric acid is a good source of sulfur. It may be, but not necessarily for the human body. Cysteine and methionine are also widespread organic sulfur compounds and according to Dr. Peat, only the right amount of these and no more.

I'd be curious to hear more about its ability to prevent the break down of acetylcholine. If I recal correctly, sarin gas does the same at an obviously increased rate. I think that could definitely be a draw back.

I'm going to test this stuff out with insulin and see what happens. I need to find a friend to watch to make sure I don't die, but it would be sweet if I could take insulin through the skin.

A quick search on pubmed will show you that DMSO and insulin has been tried and shown to be ineffective - something about the insulin peptide becoming degraded I believe.

Your post gave the impression you are wondering whether DMSO is beneficial or not. But then you write:

"I thought there might be a problem with the idea of a strange chemical penetrating my skin and stinging and killing skin cells on the way."

That shows you really made no effort to understand what is DMSO and how to apply to it. That would have required for you to read a few books on DMSO.
This would have provided you with the arguments in his favor.

Instead, you simply relied on the negative information about it, then tried to corroborate this negative information with Ray's own work.

That's not the attitude of someone truly interested in learning the truth about something. It resembles more like someone intending from the start to discredit something, while attempting to project the illusion of impartiality.
Burtlancast, That's true I did not make any effort to understand how DMSO worked, in the beginning. Why would I? I bought Tyromax with the assumption that it was a good NDT. After a few days the stings became dead skin, THEN I noticed that DMSO was an ingredient and so the investigation. The application of this product was simply one or two drops, twice a day. There was no warning on the little bottle. I know of the multitude of testimonials, reports, etc., regarding DMSO. I am very suspicious of mainstream thinking now. I was looking for the negative reports to determine whether I should use it. I found plenty, and much more scientific than the "good news." Look up Omega 3 fatty acids on pubmed, you'll be flooded with "good news." It's the one in twenty studies against the prevailing thought that I like to read twice. When something does me harm and has been shown by others to do harm, and has not been shown to be safe, then I guess I end up with a notion that this something is wrong. Maybe I should have stated that in the first sentence of my post. I guess for that I apologize.
I interpreted Ray's response to me as saying there are too many questions about DMSO. I don't see how that goes against my contention that DMSO has not been proven safe.

I couldn't find anything, do you have a link? I had a hunch it might not work but I wanted to see for myself. Guess it would be too good to be true

I read farmerMark as wanting to know how generally safe DMSO had been shown to be. That its not the same question as whether it can be useful in some situations.

Lots of things have their uses, but can be harmful in some quantities/concentrations/contexts, including many/most of the substances we often try and recommend to each other here. Sugar, salt, protein, vitamins, minerals, progesterone, thyroid, aspirin, caffeine, ... . I think it's quite reasonable to try to figure out something about the limits of safety for new things we are trying. Especially when there are symptoms of something amiss. I'm keen for people to notice the effects of the things they try, not just go on faith in someone else's word that it is a good thing. Lots of people get in trouble around here by following a suggestion or two that they've read here, and persisting with it for far too long when there are clear counterindications. (Some of them then conclude that 'peating' doesn't work for them)

With DMSO, I am not an expert, but I have read a number of articles talking about it's beneficial uses. I don't doubt that it can be helpful for some conditions some of the time. I have a jar in my cupboard. Posting evidence about the possible beneficial uses is great, as is drawing attention to some of the possibly dodgy motivations behind the information we have access to.

However, there does also seem to be at least some evidence that at some concentrations it can also do damage. I think that is an entirely legitimate issue to raise, and a service to people who want to consider such risks. Is there anything in your links that disproves the risks raised? If so, that would be useful. Pointing out that it can sometimes be useful is not the same as demonstrating that it is always safe.

I also think it is a good thing if people understand that some inappropriately high or concentrated applications of NaCl, or potassium, or caffeine, or thyroid, or sucrose, or CO2 etc, can be harmful (sometimes life-threatening).

The idea that any food is either all good or all bad seems to be one of the features of a condition that can occasionally be deadly. Problems can arise with oversimplified perceptions of other substances or tactics too.

I've read today associations between DMSO and hematuria, i had dark orange urine two days after using DMSO. Hopefully not the cause, because that would be a shame. Also, headache.

Hello, I'm a new member. I had to join at this time in order to present some important information about DMSO. I used some Tyromax a while ago and every time it caused a sting on my arm. Eventually the area began to show inflammation and dead skin. I reasoned that it might be from the DMSO and I asked the vendor and he said yes, just dilute it with water. The more I thought about the effect the more I wondered about DMSO. DMSO is a solvent that penetrates the skin and pulls in most things mixed with it. I thought there might be a problem with the idea of a strange chemical penetrating my skin and stinging and killing skin cells on the way. Obviously the chemical makes its way to the blood stream. This didn't seem like something that was "doing no harm." So began a little investigation about DMSO.

I first asked the vendor about the safety. He stated that the FDA has approved this chemical for interstitial cystitis. This was the majority of his proof of safety. At the time I argued with him about quoting the FDA knowing what Dr. Peat thinks of this arm of the pharmaceutical industry. So I researched further.

I was curious what the FDA actually thought of DMSO. In my search I found an FDA Alert 62-06, which states that interstitial cystitis is the only use DMSO is approved for. There is no topical application of DMSO that is approved by the FDA. The vendor would not comment on this point. I hate to use the FDA as evidence but in this case even they would not approve this use.

The vendor's other evidence of safety was that he had tested it on himself and some friends. I could not accept a testimonial from a vendor as proof. The vendor also would remark that the dose of DMSO involved in the FDA use was much greater than what is used in Tyromax, and no side effects. Most side effects are determined by taking a dose for a few days and noting any outward signs of toxicity. Unless there is a proper study, long term, that is testing only DMSO, I will not accept that it is proven safe. Recall that PUFA's can affect you sub clinically, for decades, until perhaps a heart attack. There is no long-term study regarding the safety of topical DMSO.

I present in this post credible references regarding the safety of DMSO. Some of the conclusions are:

"The ability of DMSO to damage neurons in dissociated cultures indicates that the toxicity likely results from a cellular effect."

"Concentrations (DMSO) between .5 and 6% resulted in stereocilia damage, hair cell swelling and dose dependent loss of hair cells." "Some studies have shown that DMSO causes an increase in extracellular sodium, potassium and calcium. DMSO has diverse effects on ion transporters and pumps." "Although clinically beneficial in some situations, DMSO can have systemic side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, bronco spasm, hypertension, and pulmonary edema. These effects appear to be dose dependent."

"Properties that are considered to be particularly important to its therapeutic and toxic effects include: ......ant cholinesterase activity; and DMSO induced histamine release by mast cells.....Combinations of DMSO with other toxic agents probably constitute its greatest toxic potential."

"Dimethyl sulfoxide inhibits acetylcholinesterase....."

"We reported previously that DMSO potentiates both the increased taurine excretion in rats and the lethal effects produced by benzene and other aromatic hydrocarbons."

"DMSO's super efficient through-the-skin delivery means that it has to be extremely pure to be safe. Any impurities or toxins present will be carried into the bloodstream. In addition, substances already on the skin when DMSO is applied, such as body lotions, will be carried into the blood." " How about cosmetics, cleaning products, fake fragrances, dish soap, pesticides, and whatever bacteria happen to be hanging around that day?" "Human skin is designed to not carry substances easily into the body for good reason."

There is the possibility of dangerous bacteria or viruses that are on your skin to be pulled in. Even dead bacteria that has been pulled in must be dealt with by the body.

"Toxicity was confirmed in vitro in a retinal neuronal cell line, at DMSO concentrations>1%." "These results highlight safety concerns of using low concentrations of DMSO as a solvent for in vivo administration and in biological assays."

"However, lower concentrations of DMSO may not always be safe in cell proliferation assays either. There are reports suggesting that DMSO at low concentrations actually stimulates the proliferation of some cell types; for example at 100 uM (0.00078% m/V) DMSO increased proliferation of OVCAR-3, SK-OV-3 and Caov-3 ovarian cancer cell lines (PMID:122713137)."

"These results suggest that mitochondrial impairment is a primary event in DMSO-induced astrocyte toxicity."
Please read the entire context in the references below.

The point I am trying to make is not that DMSO is harmful, but that it has not been proven safe. These references imply that there are serious concerns that need more study. I am not going to be a lab rat. In order for me to use something in a health supplement it better be proven safe. That's a big reason why we are here. The vendor exclaimed what would I have him do, run a million dollar test? If it's unproven, yes.

Finally, I contacted Dr. Peat and asked him what he thought of DMSO and that I was using a natural desiccated thyroid with it, topically. His response, "About 45 years ago I was interested in the effects of DMSO (on cell water and differentiation and catalysis), and experimented with it for a while, but I saw it cause some serious rashes, and decided its possible beneficial effects weren't clear enough to keep me studying it. Its effects on the acting microfilaments and cholinesterase suggest that local exposure to a high concentration could be harmful to some people. Glandular thyroid doesn't contain any active hormone, and has to be digested to release the hormone, and I'm not sure what effect DMSO will have on the proteolysis when it's ingested, but it's probably harmless when taken with food." If I'm reading this right then Tyromax will have no effect, topically.

In conclusion, I would say the questionability of DMSO is a no brainer. And classifying this as an excipient (a la Peat) I would say we have rejected a lot more with a lot less evidence. As for a NDT having to be digested to work, wow. Thanks Dr. Peat.

Mark,

Thank you for posting on the forum. I really do appreciate your efforts in trying to shed light on this important subject. However, you are selectively discussing points form our email exchange that exclusively favor your position. So, without further ado I would like to request that you post our full exchange, which will reveal (among other things) the fact that some of your own studies pointed that in the doses I used in my supplements DMSO is highly unlikely to have the toxicity for which the studies specifically tested. In our email exchange, I quoted some of your own studies saying that DMSO is known to have beneficial effects as well. So, please post our full exchange at your earliest convenience so that forum users can see what BOTH of us REALLY said and discussed. If you don't, I will create a PDF of our full email exchange and post it here. I am trying to avoid this situation as it would reveal your full email address and name.
Thank you for contributing and now please do full disclosure as it is customary to do in such cases.

Finally, Ray's comments about the NDT needing to be digested are valid but they do NOT apply to TyroMax. Why they do not apply I cannot discuss in the open forum, but I will give you the hint that there are ingredients in the NDT powder I use that do dissolve in DMSO and penetrate the skin.
Thank you for contributing and now please do full disclosure as it is customary to do in such cases.

I can't really figure how to get the email exchange up. You can do it as you are a lot slicker at that stuff.
I'd like to bring up an uncomfortable question to the forum, since Georgi has so politely reminded me. Do you really want a person who is selling you things as the main contributor of data? I find the notion anti-Peat. This is a forum of people looking for answers. I don't believe that a person selling things ,and in my opinion subtly veering them in his direction, should be allowed to post.
Initially, I was very impressed with his mastery of facts as I listened on the Generative Energy podcast. He was certainly agreeing with Dr. Peat and seemed perhaps in my subconscious as a young Peat. Certainly with more skills and mastery than I. So I was very interested in him, and I think projecting my respect for Dr. Peat onto him. So things were going along well with my learning until the day I read that he was selling some supplement. Most of me thought that well he knows Dr. Peat better than I do, and he's smarter than I am, and so great. About 10% of me said hmmm. Then he brings out another and another and I remember him stating that he's doing this at cost. And one of his admirers said please Georgi, charge a little for your trouble. At that point I said are you kidding me! No way he's doing this out of the goodness of his heart, unless he is Saint Georgi. (If you are I sincerely apologize.) I noticed the Estroban add in this forum and it wanted everyone to take a poll on how much they were willing to pay for a 30 day supply, 10,20,30,40,or 50 dollars. This is determining the price according to what the market will bear, 101. But in the same post he states "I would sell it at cost, just like Ray is selling his Progest-E". If that were so, why have the poll on what price you are willing to pay. If it were so you would have asked would anyone pay $18.32 (assuming that is the cost). And note how he wrapped himself in Dr. Peat's flag saying "just like Ray is selling his Progest-E". And I remember hearing Dr. Peat say he has had no financial connection to Progest-E for I think 20 years.
So upon reading these things I was suspicious, but still the supplements looked better than most, as I was trying to get away from the excipients. So I ordered the retinil, estroban, and the tyromax. But as I stated already in my post I reacted to it. Georgi said no problem, dilute it. I didn't use it any more and started the investigation. As I found potential problems I expressed them to Georgi in another email but he did not respond to them. I responded to every point he made and he cherry-picked his responses, and I said at the time, just like a pharmaceutical company. If he couldn't convince me with his weak FDA evidence he just wanted me to go away. I eventually did.
And so I was convinced that DMSO had problems. But then I notice there are other supplements he's selling with DMSO, and the rest of the forum less wise about the possible ill-effects. So I decided to post the evidence. By the way there is more to come.
In conclusion, I don't believe a member of the forum should be selling things directly on the forum. Let's call it the separation of science and capitalism. Of all things Dr. Peat would agree with that. And Georgi by all means put our emails up, I just read them again and they sounded pretty good. (Of course I believe Georgi is trying to intimidate me.)

See nothing wrong with this. The Internet is rife with advertisements if you hadn't noticed. He is not hiding behind affiliate links and he is not hiding behind a pseudo identity AFAIK. He is also not the only vendor on here.
Everyone should treat info found on the Internet with some suspicion, research and educate themselves and then make their own decisions based on all info.
Personally I have used a few of his supplements and have found they work for me.
Since when has science been separate from money? Dream on.

Georgi was posting and interpreting science on this forum well before he was selling anything as far as I can tell.

The DMSO formulas have been a life saver for me. I've tried various other oral thyroid supplements, and nothing has been able to effect my lowered pulse except TyroMax. I attribute that to the transdermal effect of DMSO. Personally, I and many others enjoy having Georgi here to post studies and give us his interpretation of them. If you disagree with them, then post your own studies that are in opposition and give us your take. We are free to make up our own minds. We don't have to believe anything Georgi posts, but my subjective experience backs most of it up, as do the experiences of many on this board.

You've been a member a week, so maybe you're not aware, but this has come up before and Georgi is still here because his business practices and intentions seem highly ethical to many of us. He routinely answers private messages (from you as well it seems) from people who are sick, and are searching for information.

Why do you make it personal? Sure, maybe he's losing a bit of control, but why wouldn't he? Everyone one here rips him a new ***hole, for what? Where else can you get 99.9% pure ***t? You can't. He offers certificates of analysis, you know all the bull**** in supplements. You don't like the dmso ***t, don't buy it, and he'll change solvents. I have some doubt abiut dmso as well, but i dont jump to the conclusion that haidut's out to get me! If he was lying about purity or sometbing you'd have a point. But he doesnt. We need competitors against these other supplement manufacturers that add all this bull****, or use contaminated products from china. Post your dmso criticism, but don't make it a personal thing. Im not an acolyte of haidut, it has notbing tk do with how smsrt he is! Wtf does that have to do with dmso safety! Just stick to the facts. Sure, the guy makes some money. Maybe he puts some things out at cost and chatges for otbers, who gives a ****. He has higher purity ***t than what we could get before he was in business, i don't care if he bas the personality of carrotop, it's not a personal matter. He'd probably be cool with you if you didn't add the personal angle that's b**** ***t bro. As long as he has something better than what's out there, we shouldnt attack him personally. Not saying we even should otherwise, that never accomplishes anything. Post your info on dmso and shut the **** up. Get your panties out of the bunch.

Mark, as others noted much more eloquently than I can, I had over 2,000 posts on the forum before I started selling anything.
Attached to this post is our full email exchange, so people can see what exactly we talked about and how exactly it went down. We are free to disagree on any point really, and like I said in my previous post, I do welcome disagreement. Just tone down the analysis of my character please. Aside from being extensively imaginary (given that we have not really met or interacted much) the personal comments and analysis are getting close to the point of being slanderous. Note, that so far I have not said or implied anything about your character or motives even though I can assure that I have no scarcity of opinion of both. My opinion about people is best kept to myself. The forum is "probably" more geared for discussing factual matters.
Have a nice day.

I can not disagree more. What will this give us? We would either loose some very high quality products, or we loose a brilliant forum member.

And yes, if the fact that haidut is selling stuff makes you doubt his posts more, and makes you do more research on your own, that is only a good thing.

I work in the vitamin industry as a broker. I represent companies selling vitamins in a retail setting. I think most of my lines are high quality and ethical, and would get results for people taking them. Still, the quality of Haidut's stuff is on a higher level. It would be a travesty if he had to stop selling his supps. His supps are also more dangerous and powerful. You will have to make your own decisions here. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen as they say.

Edit: I will also say this, Haidut's supps will only ever be accessible in a small way like they are here. They will never be in a retail setting because, at least in the US, you cannot get away with doing some of the combinations he does. If his supps got big, started getting lots of attention and sales, he would be shut down so fast, or have so much red tape thrown in front of him, that we could kiss this gift good bye. As someone apart of the vitamin industry, having access to these formulations is really something to be thankful for.

This is how it looks to me too.

I may have some questions about some things, and I am not fully reassured about the safety of DMSO in all circumstances. But I appreciate Haidut's large and thoughtful contribution of time and information here, and I see him providing high quality supplement options that some people are finding very helpful, and that they would not currently have access to any other way. I don't want either of those to stop.

In conclusion, I would say the questionability of DMSO is a no brainer.

What is a no brainer, in my opinion, is the attempted fear-mongering and DMSO hit piece you've committed on these boards.

You've selectively posted DMSO's negative studies while making absolutely no effort to investigate Dmso's original researchers . You're then citing an anonymous and ambigious email exchange by Ray to validate it.

That's supposed to be scientific ?

Substituting the need for a balanced personal review of the evidence with another's person thoughts equals search for the truth ? .

Is Ray's word the final end all of everything ?

To top it all, you're asking to censor a member who's posted here valuable information for the past 3 years ?

Me thinks this place is way over your head, kid.
