“Eggs. You probably know that eggs are high in protein. However, what you may not know is that egg whites are particularly high in the amino acids glycine and proline, both of which are necessary to create collagen in the body. Consuming eggs regularly can provide your body with the building blocks of collagen.May 28, 2021”

Dr Peat explaining that store bought ‘collagen’ are not really collagen.

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBwc0M283Vc&t=1485s

This is a really excellent find Peatress! RP makes things more clear about the differences between gelatin vs collagen. Gelatin lacks the toxic three amino acids that are not needed after about 25, and promotes tumor growth and shortening of the life span when eating more than necessary. You won’t create collagen by eating collagen it actually does the opposite eating it in excess when not needed for growth. He said, is this interview, that eating pig feet and skins, chicken wings, feet and backs and homemade gelatinous soups is what he promotes, not the collagen powders. We want glycine and proline for their calming effect and avoid methionine, tryptophan and cystine which are excitatory and inflammatory.

I think the point Dr Peat was making is that the store bought ‘collagen’ is actually gelatine but processed. I’ve heard him say great lakes gelatine is fine even the green can. Of course getting gelatin from animal parts will always be superior to processed gelatin.

“When we eliminated Collagen 1 production from tumor cells, the animal models with brain tumors lived much longer. This step removes oncostreams from tumors and reduces tumor aggressive behavior because the tumors need Collagen 1 to move in the specific way we discovered,” said Lowenstein.

“Clots are formed when soluble fibrinogen polymerizes, condenses, and becomes insoluble. Even before the particles of fibrin become insoluble, a clot-dissolving system is continuously breaking it down into small peptides. These peptides tend to cause capillaries to leak. If a massive amount of fibrinogen and fibrin leak out of capillaries, clots are formed outside capillaries, and the peptides released in the process of cleaning up this debris contribute to further leakage, and to inflammation. The inflammation stimulates the production of collagen-rich connective tissue, and a fibrotic tissue replaces the functional tissues. Many of Hans Selye’s experiments explored the conditions in which inflammation, exudation, and fibrosis developed, sometimes ending with calcification of the region.

The presence of fibrin in the extracellular matrix interferes with the differentiated functioning of cells, which depend on their contact with a normal matrix. When healing and regeneration occur in the normal matrix, the remodeling of the tissue involves the breakdown of collagen, which releases peptides with antiinflammatory, antiangiogenic and antiinvasive actions. When fibrin is present, the remodeling process releases peptides that increase cell growth, invasiveness, inflammation, and the production of new blood vessels, which in turn become leaky.“ -Ray Peat

“Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a supposedly mysterious condition in which tissues harden, with an excessive deposition of fibrous material. Besides hardening the skin, it can involve fibrosis of the heart and other organs, and can cause changes in blood vessels of the kidneys like those seen in some types of hypertension, and often involves Raynaud's phenomenon and osteoporosis of the fingers. (Silicone functions as an adjuvant, making exposure to irritants, solvents or infections more harmful. This seems to be the reason for the association between breast implants and scleroderma.) Another type of disease that involves hardening of the skin is scleredema, in which the skin thickens with an accumulation of "mucin" between collagen bundles, and in which fibroblasts are overactive in producing collagen. (Varga, et al.) This condition is believed to often follow a "febrile illness" and is associated with diabetes. My interest in these conditions comes from my awareness that estrogen promotes collagen formation, and that changes in the connective tissue are deeply associated with the processes of stress and aging, following the ideas of Metchnikov and Selye.” -Ray Peat

I thought it was just the opposite from the statement below. I thought collagen supplements is broken down further from gelatin…

“In fact, most people have likely heard collagen and gelatin mentioned in conjunction with the other. That’s because gelatin is actually derived from collagen.

“When collagen breaks down, it becomes gelatin,” says Dr. Josh Axe, a doctor of chiropractic and natural medicine, and a certified nutrition specialist. “A great example of this is found in bone broth: The bones are loaded with collagen, and as the broth cooks, it breaks down into gelatin. In other words, gelatin is full of the same good stuff as collagen, just in a different form.”

Because it forms the familiar gel when mixed with water, gelatin is best used in cooking and is thus fairly easy to incorporate into the diet. (Collagen, conversely, is best taken in supplement form.)

In addition to consuming bone broth, people can easily purchase organic, grass-fed gelatin online or in health food stores and add it to gelatin-based dessert recipes, or even in smoothies.“

I was on the last bit in my can of collagen hydrolysate and got out a new can, this morning, and poured the little bit left into the new can, and notice the hydrolysate was more yellow than the new can, which was a clean white color. A closer look at the label on the front, and in the ingredients, says “peptides” instead of “hydrolysate”. Even the numbers in the analysis on the back of the cans are different from each other. I wonder why this is?

“Hydrolyzed collagen powder is another named for collagen peptides. It is important to understand that hydrolyzed collagen versus collagen peptides are two names for the same product. Full length collagen is broken down into collagen peptides through a process called hydrolysis, so collagen peptides are frequently also referred to as hydrolyzed peptides, or just hydrolyzed collagen.”

I quit using great lakes when they changed their recipe and it went from white and small and easily mixing and effective, to yellow and huge and not mixing well and ineffective.

It's possible they fixed it since then. I called and complained and they sent me a replacement can but it was like the other type.

Mine was the opposite experience, with the old can being yellow and the “new look” one being white. I am only on my second morning having the new one so hopefully all goes well.

“Seen from the perspective of the stress-leakage syndrome, any serious injury or sickness damages all organs. The exhaled breath is being used to diagnose inflammatory lung disease, since so many of the mediators of inflammation are volatile, but systemic diseases such as cancer and arthritis, and relatively minor stress can be detected by changes in the chemicals found in the breath. Polyunsaturated fats and their breakdown products--aldehydes, prostaglandins, isoprostanes, hydrocarbons, and free radicals--and carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrite, and hydrogen peroxide are increased in the breath by most stresses. Both proline and glycine (which are major amino acids in gelatin) are very protective for the liver, increasing albumin, and stopping oxidative damage.“ -Ray Peat

Most of us on the forum know how important a gelatinous bone broth is and use a gelatin or collagen supplement as a substitute for whatever the reason is. I don’t like nit knowing what and why I am ingesting something and decided to put my to learning in more detail the different components in collagen hydrolysate. So today I am starting at “A” for “Alanine”…

“Alanine is an amino acid that is used to make proteins. It is used to break down tryptophan and vitamin B-6. It is a source of energy for muscles and the central nervous system. It strengthens the immune system and helps the body use sugars.”

“Benefits of consuming more alanine may include helping the body use glucose, helping lower cholesterol, supporting maintenance of muscle mass, enhancing physical performance, supplying the body with energy during periods of fasting and supporting prostate health.”

“L-alanine supplements have the potential to increase blood sugar levels, which can be problematic for people with diabetes if their blood sugar levels are already normal or too high. Anyone with diabetes should work with their doctor to monitor their blood sugar levels before taking alanine supplements.

Always read dosage directions carefully when starting any new supplement, including amino acids. Taking high doses of amino acids can possibly cause digestive issues, skin itchiness and tingling, and be hard for the kidneys and liver to process.”

Here is more about what is in gelatin….

“L-arginine is an amino acid that helps the body build protein.

It also releases nitric oxide into the blood. Nitric oxide acts to widen blood vessels in the bloodstream, which may help certain circulatory conditions, according to a 2016 reviewTrusted Source.

The substance also stimulates the release of insulin into the body.

A person’s body naturally produces L-arginine under typical circumstances. People also get additional L-arginine as part of their regular diet.

Food sources, such as red meat, fish, dairy, and eggs, contain low amounts of L-arginine that can help the body replenish its necessary resources. Plant-based sources can include pumpkin seeds, soybeans, lentils, and chickpeas.

Occasionally, a person’s need for L-arginine may exceed their body’s ability to produce or consume it naturally. This is often true for older adults or people with certain medical conditions.“

“L-arginine has two effects: it turns into nitric oxide and helps the body build protein.

These effects give L-arginine an array of potential benefitsTrusted Source, including:

*supporting heart health
*reducing chest pain
*helping build muscles
*repairing wounds
*improving male fertility”

“Examples of benefits and uses of L-arginine from scientific research include the following:

Growth hormone reserve test: Healthcare professionals use L-arginine in tests to stimulate the pituitary gland. These tests can helpTrusted Source determine if children are producing sufficient levels of growth hormone.

Reducing high blood pressure: A 2021 meta-analysis suggests L-arginine can help reduce high blood pressure.

Correcting hereditary disorders of urea synthesis: The body uses arginine in the urea cycle, which produces urea, a component of urine. The body may use this to correct certain hereditary disordersTrusted Source.

Preventing heart disease: According to a 2019 meta-analysisTrusted Source, L-arginine may be useful in preventing heart disease due to narrow blood vessels.

Treating erectile dysfunction: Low levels of L-arginine may have links to erectile dysfunction (ED). Researchers in a 2017 studyTrusted Source hypothesized that this may be due, in part, to narrowed blood vessels. People often use L-arginine supplementation, sometimes with other treatments, such as sildenafil (Viagra), to treat ED.

Easing inflammation of the digestive tract in premature infants: L-arginine may help prevent necrotizing enterocolitis, a serious illness in premature infants, according to a 2017 studyTrusted Source.

Reducing type 2 diabetes risk: Because L-arginine can help lower blood sugar, it may help control blood sugar in people with diabetes. A 2018 studyTrusted Source found that taking L-arginine may reduce the risk or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Treating peripheral arterial disease: Because of L-arginine’s effects in widening blood vessels, it may help those with peripheral arterial disease.

Treating pregnancy complications: L-arginine may helpTrusted Source treat pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, or high blood pressure.

Improving athletic performance: The results of a 2020 studyTrusted Source suggest that L-arginine supplements may have a positive effect on aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance.

Additionally, L-arginine could help with many other health issues. However, more research is necessary to evaluate its potential to do the following:

*heal woundsTrusted Source faster

*alleviate anxietyTrusted Source

*improve breathingTrusted Source in people with illnesses affecting the respiratory system

There are several additional areas that researchers are interested in exploring regarding L-arginine and its effects on the human body.

With this in mind, anyone interested in taking L-arginine needs to talk with their doctor about the potential benefits and risks before using it.”

I am on number three here, of the 20 amino acids that are in gelatin….

This second part about taking amino acids separately, makes me wonder about people taking glycine by itself, which is also an amino acid….

“Aspartic acid is a non-essential amino acid. This means it can be made from other substances in your body. It helps make other amino acids and some nucleotides. Aspartic acid also plays a role in energy production in the body. It also helps send chemical signals through the nervous system.”

“Using a single amino acid supplement may lead to negative nitrogen balance. This can lessen how well your metabolism works. It can make your kidneys work harder. In children, taking single amino acid supplements may cause growth problems.

You should not take high doses of single amino acids for long periods of time.“

“Aspartic acid is a nonessential amino acid. Amino acids are building blocks of proteins.

"Nonessential" means that our bodies produce it, even if we do not get this amino acid from the food we eat.

Information
Aspartic acid helps every cell in the body work. It plays a role in:

Hormone production and release

Normal nervous system function

Plant sources of aspartic acid include:

Avocado
Asparagus
Molasses

Animal sources of aspartic acid include:

Wild game
Oysters
Sausage meat“

Here is number 4 of the 20 amino acids in gelatin, cysteine…..

“Cysteine is a non-essential amino acid important for making protein, and for other metabolic functions. It's found in beta-keratin. This is the main protein in nails, skin, and hair. Cysteine is important for making collagen. It affects skin elasticity and texture. Cysteine has antioxidant properties.”

#5/20 - Glutamic Acid

“Glutamic acid is an amino acid used to form proteins. In the body it turns into glutamate. This is a chemical that helps nerve cells in the brain send and receive information from other cells. It may be involved in learning and memory. It may help people with hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) or achlorhydria (no stomach acid).”
