Hello Peatarians—
I'm a male in my late 20's. I had asthma as a kid which led to chronic mouth breathing and poor craniofacial development. As a result I have narrow maxillary arches. My tongue doesn't fit easily at the roof of my mouth when resting on the alveolar ridge, making nasal breathing not as natural as it could be.
I know from the work of Ray Peat. Buteyko and others how important tissue CO2 concentration is and how proper breathing leads to better tissue oxygenation.
I cannot breathe exclusively through my nose during sleep without aid. I wake with a dry mouth. During the day I try to slow my breathing to ensure that I am not hyperventilating and losing CO2, but my control pause between breaths is very short, and I catch myself breathing through my mouth when I'm focusing intently on something else and I let my autonomic system take over.
From what I understand the bone that is involved is largely fused at this age, and I don't know if any dental appliance could make a meaningful difference even if I could afford it.
I'm eating using Peat style diet principles—is there anything else I can do besides bag breathing that will help? Is there anything I'm overlooking that could help me retrain my body so I can maintain nasal breathing throughout the day and night easily, and without hyperventilation?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
