“As it has every year since 2004, the Environmental Working Group has analyzed data from the FDA and released its Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists, showing consumers the conventional produce most and least likely to be contaminated with pesticides. And this year, it's also released the ugly data that more than 90 percent of conventional citrus fruits contain carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting fungicides.”

This was posted elsewhere by Peatness….

“It is common for conventional farmers to use a range of pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides and fungicides on their fields, and sometimes apply the chemicals directly onto their crops, as a means to fight weeds, bugs and plant diseases. Residues of these chemicals are found not only in food but often in drinking water as well.”

“More pesticides are being used than ever before and the annual number of agriculture workers who fall ill from pesticide poisoning has risen to at least 385 million globally. Furthermore, glyphosate and other such products are considered one of the main causes of the decline in biodiversity.
"Toxic pesticides that are not approved or authorized in the EU may still be exported, causing double standards in the countries of the Global South," said Inka Dewitz, the senior program officer for international food policy at the Heinrich Böll foundation, which co-published the report.“

“The key difference is the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides as well as genetically modified seeds. Most conventional farms rely on those practices but they are banned at organic farms. Instead, organic farmers must control weeds and pests with techniques such as rotating different crops and planting cover crops that squeeze out weeds and add nutrients to the soil.

Crops can only be deemed organic if they are grown on land that hasn’t been treated with synthetic substances for three years. During that period, farmers can grow crops, but they won’t get the extra premium that accompanies organic crops.”

“Not only that, but non-organic oats contain the highest amount of pesticide residue than any other crop in the U.S., particularly the cancer-causing herbicide glyphosate. In February 2019, a “compelling link” was found between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma [2], and since then, over $10 billion to has been paid out to settle thousands of glyphosate-related cancer lawsuits across the country.

The Environmental Working Group tested samples of Quaker Oats products and found that their oats had the most glyphosate per sample, with more than 1,000 ppb in more than 66 percent of the samples. That level of exposure is more than 60 times the safety level set by the Environmental Protection Agency, and that’s just legally speaking. However, legal is not the same as harmless. And unfortunately, more than 200 million pounds of glyphosate is sprayed on crops in the US each year, not just on oats, but on every GMO crop like grain, soy, and corn [3].“

“According to the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, almond orchards were treated with more pesticides than any other local crop in 2017. Harmful chemicals are sprayed year-round to combat ants, mites, leafrollers, peach twig borers and weeds. Also, fertilizer pollution can spike drinking water with hazardous nitrates. Instead, consumers can purchase milk that is packaged in sustainably sourced and recyclable materials and buy shelf-stable milk to conserve energy from refrigeration.”

“Most oat milk is not organic and has added junk ingredients, just like almond milk. Oatly, the most popular oat milk brand, adds rapeseed oil to their milk. This oil is highly processed and high in omega-6s, making it inflammatory to our bodies.
Also, oats are one of the crops most commonly sprayed with glyphosate. The EWG tested different oat products and found 2/3 to be above the “safe” standard of glyphosate levels. Some of the products were even organic!
So, if the oats in the milk are organic or not, you are consuming glyphosate. Studies have shown it increases oxidative stress, disrupts estrogen pathways, impairs brain function, and leads to the development of cancers. The state of California has even recognized it as a chemical known to cause cancer.
If you want to consume oat milk, buy brands with only 2 ingredients- organic oats and water(like Malk and Thrive Market). Stay away from the Oatlys, Silks, and Almond Breezes of the world. They add natural flavors, gums, and inflammatory oils to their milk, harming our health.“

“NBC News analyzed data from the U.S. Geological Survey surrounding the use of glyphosate in agriculture, with the weed killer being used on everything from corn to soy beans to fruits and more. In fact, the data showed nearly half of all produce in the U.S. are sprayed with weed killer containing the chemical.

According to the report, data showed Iowa and Illinois, known for growing corn and soy bean products, accounted for 15% of the national usage. And several counties in the Chicago area had levels among the highest in the country.“

“Organic foods are GMO-free (foods that are not derived from genetic engineering). In the modern era, genetic modification of food products is a significant worry. To boost their resistance to pesticides and herbicides, many foods and plants have changed their DNA in ways that do not naturally occur. Long-term research has not been done to confirm their safety, despite the lack of clear proof of their risks.

Experts in food safety contend that GMOs are a significant factor in slowing brain development, harm to internal organs, gastrointestinal problems, and the thickening of the digestive tract. As a result, eating organic food has health benefits because it does not include GMOs, a common ingredient in non-organic foods.“

“For half a century, staple food crops in the United States — such as corn, wheat, apples and citrus — have been sprayed with chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate pesticide that can permanently damage the developing brains of children, causing reduced IQ, loss of working memory, and attention deficit disorders.

Now, after a decades-long legal fight and under a court-ordered deadline, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has finally issued a final rule banning all food uses of chlorpyrifos.“

“More than half of all apples and broccoli in the U.S. are sprayed with chlorpyrifos.
Chlorpyrifos is also used on feed crops that lead to residues in milk, eggs, and meat.
USDA’s Pesticide Data Program found chlorpyrifos residue on citrus and melons even after being washed and peeled. By volume, chlorpyrifos is most used on corn and soybeans, with over a million pounds applied annually to each crop.”

“In conventional food production systems, not all pesticides remain on a plant’s exterior. Systemic pesticides are chemicals that are actually absorbed by a plant when applied to seeds, soil, or leaves. The chemicals then circulate through the plant’s tissues, killing the insects that feed on them. Use of these pesticides on food crops began in 1998, and has steadily increased during the past 10 years. Unlike with traditional insecticides, you can’t wash or peel off systemic pesticide residues.

The four main systemics used on food crops (listed below) are members of the nitroguanidine/neonicotinoid group of chemicals, which has been implicated in the mysterious colony collapse disorder that has killed millions of bees.”

“Thank you so much yes as they say you get what you pay for and there's a reason why I pay three times as much for organic versions of everything because every time I test that I pay for it like the bamboo shoots that I ate have ruined my entire day I feel sick now and I don't get that reaction when I buy the $4 cans that are organic that at least the lining of the can supposedly is safe so it's just worth it and I'm not going to take the chance with the mushrooms either because if there's something in them I'll react to them and I'd rather not do that lesson learned”

“The secret to gut health and better sleep is in your plate

You should forget about late-night snacks, and try to avoid consuming any source of calories about 2–3 hours before bedtime because it can affect your sleep. Instead, try to get a wholesome dinner early in the evening that will keep you satiated so you have time to digest before hitting the hay.

Maria Kadarkova, registered nutritionist who works at Atlas, also recommends stretching your legs after your evening meal, in addition to eating earlier: “Kill two birds with one stone, go for a walk after dinner, it may benefit quality of sleep and digestion.”

Foods and tips for your gut:

  • Organic food can support microbiome health because there are indications that pesticides can harm the good bacteria we need in our tract. It's not just fruit and vegetables, but also grains, beans, dairy, and animal products too.”

“Organic livestock raised for meat, eggs, and dairy products must be raised in living conditions accommodating their natural behaviors (such as the ability to graze on pasture) and fed organic feed and forage. They may not be given antibiotics, growth hormones, or any animal by-products.”

“Organic meat and milk can be richer in certain nutrients. Results of a 2016 European study show that levels of certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50 percent higher in organic meat and milk than in conventionally raised versions.”

“Materials or methods not allowed in organic farming include:

Artificial (synthetic) fertilizers to add nutrients to the soil

Sewage sludge as fertilizer

Most synthetic pesticides for pest control

Using radiation (irradiation) to preserve food or to get rid of disease or pests

Using genetic technology to change the genetic makeup (genetic engineering) of crops, which can improve disease or pest resistance, or to improve crop harvests

Antibiotics or growth hormones for farm animals (livestock)“

“Some 25-30% of food harvested is lost as a result of spoilage before it can be consumed. This problem is particularly prevalent in hot, humid countries.Food irradiation is the process of exposing foodstuffs to gamma rays to kill bacteria that can cause food-borne disease, and to increase shelf-life. It has the same benefits as when food is heated, refrigerated, frozen, or treated with chemicals, but does not change the temperature or leave residues. In all parts of the world there is growing use of irradiation technology to preserve food. More than 60 countries worldwide have introduced regulations allowing the use of irradiation for food products including spices, grains, fruit, vegetables, and meat. It can replace potentially harmful chemical fumigants that are used to eliminate insects from dried fruit and grain, legumes, and spices.“

“Radiation is also used to sterilise food packaging. In the Netherlands, for example, milk cartons are freed from bacteria by irradiation.”
