Hi, I've searched the forum and also Haidut's site and not found any references I can give to a doctor friend who
is clueless about why antacids are not the way to go. If I've missed a thread, please point me to it, or if you have access to studies,
I'd appreciate links. Thanks.

Antacids or PPIs?
Quote...
PPIs have been associated with an increased risk of a number of adverse effects including osteoporotic-related fractures, Clostridium difficile infection, community-acquired pneumonia, vitamin B12 deficiency, kidney disease, and dementia, demonstrated by a number of case-control, cohort studies, and meta-analyses.

The is from a LA Times Article. I cut it out of their newspaper paper and kept a copy for future reference. In the 1998 LA Times Article the title was
"Antacids Can Hinder Absorption of B-12"
there was no Los Angeles Times url link included with the article in their newspaper and apparently from what I noted it was originally published by the sun-sentinel.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY November 12, 1998 | Joe and Theresa Graedon
[---second article---]
Dear People's Pharmacy: I have always been healthy except for a hiatal hernia. Heartburn from this condition has led my doctor to prescribe Zantac and Propulsid over the years. He now has me on Pepcid and Prilosec.

I wonder if I have a vitamin B-12 deficiency. I have very little energy. I also have a feeling of pins and needles in my feet. What really worries me is my memory: I have trouble matching names to faces and I've missed important appointments.

When I asked my doctor if these medicines could interfere with vitamin B-12, he said no. The pharmacist didn't know. Didn't I see in your column that stomach medicine can do this? Is there any evidence I can show my doctor?

Dear Reader: Have your physician read an article by Dr. Stefan Marcuard in the Annals of Internal Medicine (1994, vol. 120, pp. 211-215). He or she may also want to consult an abstract from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy in 1998 by J. Mark Ruscin, Pharm. D. Their research demonstrates that reducing stomach acid limits vitamin B-12 absorption.

The People's Pharmacy appears every Thursday. Write Joe and Teresa Graedon at 235 E. 45th St., New York, NY 10017 or e-mail them via their Web site, www.peoplespharmacy.com.

For some people GERD/indigestion may be due to hypoacidity, not hyperacidity.

Exactly. Most people who have GERD have low stomach acid. I have somewhat low stomach acid. If I take 500mg of calcium carbonate (a common antacid) I get heartburn.

In which case H blocker, PPI, and alkaline/buffer or common "antacids" are counterproductive.

I have that problem when I eat starch. So I try to avoid it and my solution is to pour a tablespoon of pure ACV (organic apple cider vinegar) into a glass, add our home made distilled-water, which is run through carbon filtration after distilling and drink it down. I do it as soon as I wake up in the morning.

After that I may or may not go back to sleep depending on the time.
Also I gave up and avoid most starch especially potatoes and rice.

If my husband is eating his melt the cheese with sliced hard boiled eggs in the middle of the cheese, which he puts on top of sour dough or French type of bread he will give me a postage stamp bite. Lol

I found Dr. Peat's old-site by trying to find the entertainer Madonna's doctor who gave lectures on the hazards of starch. It was as though she had disappeared. I didn't find out that she had died for about 5 years after I found Dr Peat's writings
